The environmental cost of our daily digital activities is much greater than we think. While each email sent causes an average of 4 grams of CO2 emissions, a Google search produces 0.2 grams of CO2. Video watching has the largest carbon footprint - just 1 hour of HD video watching is equivalent to 1.6 kg of CO2 emissions. Social media usage, cloud storage, online shopping and even simple website visits contribute to energy consumption and carbon emissions. Data centers account for 1% of world electricity consumption and this rate is increasing every year.

Sustainable Digital Practices

Sustainable digital practices offer practical solutions that can be applied at both individual and corporate levels. In email usage, removing unnecessary attachments, cleaning spam emails and optimizing bulk email sending can provide significant savings. In web design, using visual optimization, lazy loading, caching and green hosting options, we can reduce the carbon footprint of websites by up to 50%. In mobile applications, closing unnecessary background processes, optimizing push notifications and minimizing data usage are effective methods.
